Lesson Types Offered
Lessons on the Flat
Flatwork is the foundation of good riding. These lessons are offered to riders of all levels to practice and improve their technical skills. We curate exercises that challenge and prepare riders for higher - level riding and competition. Riders will learn to not only walk, trot and canter, but to move the horse off the leg, develop an independent seat and soft hands, and understand how to out the horse "on the bit" so it moves correctly and comfortably. These lessons focus on balance, rhythm, straightness and connection between horse and rider.

Jumping Lessons
Jumping lessons at Sage Hill Sport horses are taught with a strong foundation in balance rhythm, and safety. Our program starts riders over ground poles and small grids to build confidence before moving on to verticals and full courses.

We focus on:
-
Two-point and jump position
-
Proper use of aids and pace
-
Gymnastics and grid work for timing and accuracy
-
Course riding and related distances
-
Building a trusting partnership with the horse
Riders progress at their own pace, with a focus on both technical skill and mental readiness. Whether your goal is to complete at shows or simply have fun learning to jump, we tailor each lesson to help riders succeed and grow.

Our jumping lessons are open to both recreational and competitive riders, and we always keep safety, confidence, and horsemanship at the center of the experience.

Ground Lessons
Ground lessons are a vital part of our program, helping riders become confident and capable horsemen and horsewomen both in and out of the saddle. These unmounted sessions focus on practical, hands-on horsemanship-building skills that are essential for responsible horse care and overall rider development.

Riders learn how to safely handle, groom, and tack up their horses, as well as more advanced topics such as wound care, feeding, blanketing, basic first aid, and recognizing when a vet should be called. We also cover key horse behavior concepts, so students can better understand equine body language and communication.

By working with horses on the ground, students gain patience, confidence, and respect for the animal-all of which carry over into the saddle. Ground lessons are especially valuable for young or beginner riders and form the foundation for a lifelong relationship with horses.

At Sage Hill, we believe great riding starts on the ground.

Equicize Lessons
Equicize (this concept was coined by Sally Batten) is a unique fitness-focused lesson format designed to help riders build the strength, balance, and body awareness needed for effective riding-without the pressure of learning technical skills.

These sessions include a combination of mounted and unmounted exercises, such as stretching, balance drills, core work, and body alignment practice-many done at the walk or halt, so riders can focus fully on their own position and feel. Unmounted portions may include yoga-style stretches, strength exercises, and rider-specific conditioning.

While riders won't be working on advanced riding techniques in Equicize lessons, they'll be training the correct muscles, improving coordination, and building stamina-all essential for becoming a strong and independent rider in any discipline. These lessons are a great supplement to regular riding instruction and are especially helpful for riders recovering from injury, new to the sport, or looking to imporve fitness and posture in the saddle.

Equicize helps students become more rider-fit, aware, and confident-so they can get more out of every ride.
